Ruins

Mountain river, clouds strolling by
Wind to eye, I kiss the breeze
In the stillness, hear an angel sigh,
Cross the never-ending time.
I see you, and you, and you—
Like an old photo, slightly fuzzy—
And I wonder ’bout the depths
That the soul can go to wander.
Chorus:
Across the ruins of a civilization
Across the ruins of a nation gone wild
Across the ruins of a civilization
I hope that civilization will be good to my child.

If you speak with two-face, do you speak with sin—
Internal morality gone wild.
Sip a soda, sip a gin,
Sip an understanding of your mind.
Alas, the phrase, it slipped me now—
Must be arthritis of my mind—
As I dig and grovel for the light within,
Picture postcards right on time.
And time and time again
Chorus:
Dance across the ruins of civilization
Dance across the pictures in my mind
Dance across the ruins of civilization
I hope that civilization will be good to my child.

If you play with truth, there’s a dull aching pain—
Could be worse, could be better—
But there’s a thought that keeps me sustained:
The road to hell is a two-way lane,
And at any time I want to,
I can turn around go in the direction that I came.
Dance across the ruins of civilization …

Mountain river …
